What colours do dogs see?

When choosing a toy for your dog or a training tool, it is very important to know which colours attract the attention of your dog.

It does not see in white, and it does not see like a human being.

The explanation lies in the cones, the photosensitive cells in the eyes that are sensitive to colours and details.

While a human being has 150 cones, the dog has only 40, which is why it has a dichromatic type of vision. This does not mean that dogs have poorer eyesight than humans: they are able to recognise movements better, see better at night and fixate on a point very carefully.

According to scientific studies, a dog would be able to recognise different shades of blue, yellow and grey, but would not be able to see colours such as green, pink, red and purple.

Next time you are in a dog shop, think about that!
