Why do dogs sniff other dogs’ butts?

When dogs sniff each other’s butts, they are talking to each other.

The sense of smell is a very important sense. Dogs develop a perception of the world through smells. Lips, ears, genitals and anal area are the points of his fellow dogs that the dog sniffs, to understand who is in front of him.

So dogs see through their sense of smell. They pick up important information and that is why dogs sniff their bums and understand:

– hierarchical order and domination,

– mood,

– gender,

– if a dog is in heat

– if it is healthy or sick.

If the dog is unwilling to communicate anything about himself, then he will react to the ritual by backing away and keeping his tail down to prevent the other dog from taking information about him. So the next time you see your dog sniffing another dog’s bottom, give him time to have a chat with his new friend!

All the Best,
